THE BETZ INSTITUTE®

The BETZ INSTITUTE® for innovative orthopedics is well-known and respected worldwide for its advanced approach to reconstructive surgery. It was founded over 15 years ago by biologist Yvonne Betz, MSc., and Dr. Augustin Betz. The predominant focus is cosmetic limb-lengthening with internal systems.

With the mission statement to REACH NEW HEIGHTS, the BETZ INSTITUTE® offers first-class treatment to its patients from the first day on. Every patient is welcomed by a certified member of the Betz team upon their arrival and is personally guided through every phase of their treatment. Because our Institute is well-known for its perfection, it is no wonder that it attracts a huge number of international patients every year.

The BETZ INSTITUTE® is part of a private clinic, newly built in 2013 as part of the Diakonie Clinic Neunkirchen. The Diakonie Clinic Neunkirchen offers state-of-the-art techniques in general surgery, traumatology, plastic and hand surgery, oncology, general medicine, radiology, anesthesia and emergency medicine.

Our Institute offers over 30 beds, three operation theaters and a team of surgeons, anesthetists, radiologists, physiotherapists and nurses, all of whom are carefully selected by Dr. Betz, and who are dedicated to and enthusiastic about cosmetic limb-lengthening and reconstructive orthopedics.

The BETZ INSTITUTE® is deeply familiar with the handling of intramedullary nails. Worldwide, it's hard to find another institute that uses this technique in so many reconstructive and, moreover, cosmetic operations like ours.

Prof. Dr. Augustin Betz, MD (Medical Director)

Dr. Augustin Betz is the founder of the Betz Institute and one of the very best surgeons in his field. Dr. Betz is internationally well-known for his approach to complex orthopedic operations. He has been perfecting minimally invasive techniques for more than 20 years and, therefore, is one of the most experienced cosmetic and reconstructive-orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Betz was born 1950 in Saarlouis, studied medicine from 1969-1975 in Homburg/Saar and Freiburg, completed his medical specialization in 1982, received a post-doctorate certification to be a professor (habilitation) in 1992 and was appointed in 1993 to a professorship at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Before he founded the Betz Institute, he worked at the following clinics: Buhl/Baden, Blieskastel/Saar, the University Clinic Saarland and in the University Clinic Munich as Head of the Department. From 1993 to 2000, he was the Chief Physician at the Clinic for Trauma Surgery, Hand Surgery, and Plastic- and Reconstructive Surgery at the Clinic of Konstanz.

Dr. Betz holds a lot of patents in the field of innovative surgery and has good business contacts especially to America, Russia, and Asia. Furthermore, he is an associate lecturer at several academies and schools, for example at the "Academy for the Advanced Surgical Training of the Professional Organization of German Surgeons, e.V." He is a former member of the advisory committee of the "Journal of Trauma Surgery" and currently advises the magazine "Medical Education." He is active as a publisher himself with many publications in German and international journals.

The subjects Dr. Betz specializes in include: limb-lengthening, corrections to arms, legs, hands and feet, the development of revolutionary implants for corrective and reconstructive extremity surgery, research and development of innovative endoprosthetics, special teaching seminars for surgeons who work with reconstructive methods, and Green Surgery.

Dr. Betz invests his complete abilities and expertise in meeting the wishes of his patients.

Dr. Axel Becker

The fascination of extremity-extensions through a telescopic nail inserted into the bone marrow cavity, has engaged Dr.Axel Becker since the beginning of his occupation as a surgeon. The possibility to help patients who suffer from short-stature, motivates him over and over again. The lengthening and correction of extremities requires skills in the field of bone surgery, i.e. orthopedic and trauma surgery, as well as in the field of aesthetics, namely plastic surgery. The double specialization of Dr. Becker; specialist in orthopedic and trauma surgery as well as a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, was the logical continuation of this idea and combined orthopedic craftsmanship with aesthetic standards.

In 2013 Dr. Becker devised his first fully implantable nail. This being fully electrically and mechanically operated by a small battery. His ambitions were big. On the one hand the nail should offer maximum comfort, on the other, its should be stable and reliable. The housing of the various electronic components became a problem especially because they had to be shielded from the tissue fluids present in the body. All this required space. Corrosion had to be prevented and stability and resilience were not to be compromised. The nail however became thinner as the battery and power transmission gear became larger. For patient safety purposes, Dr. Becker made his own plans to search for a fully resilient implant with an entirely mechanical function, a solid structure and as few different components as possible.

This led him to Professor Betz whose BETZBONE avoided the very problems which bothered him in the electric-mechatronic operated implants. The philosophy of the BETZBONE system with its reduction to solely mechanical components, made out of 100% rust-free stainless steel and focusing on high resilience in combination with a higher distraction-force, satisfied him completely.

Dr. Becker then had the opportunity to operate side by side with Professor Betz thus helping him get acquainted with the system. He also learnt to appreciate Prof. Betz’s professional expertise as well as his loving and human nature towards his patients. Ever since, a friendship has grown out of their business cooperation, one he would not want to go without. Dr. Becker and Prof. Betz have operated together on innumerable amounts of leg-extensions. Prof. Betz recognized himself in the highly precise surgical technique of Dr. Becker thus leading him to the idea of handing over his practice and surgical method to Dr. Becker. Dr. Becker is in turn very grateful for the trust Prof. Betz has in him and looks forward to continuing his life’s work in his stead.

WHY THE BETZ INSTITUTE®

  • Quality

The BETZ INSTITUTE® offers all internal and external limb-lengthening systems available on the market and, furthermore, offers a unique, minimally damaging and comparably fast limb-lengthening method with internal systems. In regards to these aspects, the Betzbone® is well-established as the internal system with the highest lengthening capacity, the highest stability, and the easiest lengthening control. Therefore, the Betzbone has a reputation of being the safest and most reliable implant for monolateral and bilateral limb-lengthening procedures.

  • Experience

Dr. Betz is one of the most experienced and well-known limb-lengthening pioneers with internal systems worldwide. He uses a wide variety of different external and internal limb-lengthening systems. As the inventor of the most innovative intramedullary telescopic nails, Dr. Betz is the best choice to explain the advantages and disadvantages of the different lengthening methods.

  • Passion

From the first contact on, every single patient is aided by a member of the Betz team during every phase of the lengthening procedure. The team members of the Betz Institute are available for the complete stay in Germany. Every patient gets first-class support from our highly committed and experienced staff.

  • Results

More than 1,500 limb-lengthening procedures have been successfully completed, measuring distances of up to 12 cm/4.7 inches in the thighbone alone and 20 cm/7.8 inches in the thigh- and shinbone together. Dr. Betz exclusively uses minimally invasive skin cuts (0.5 - 2 cm/0.2 - 0.8 inches) in the operation, thus resulting in smaller scars compared to other methods.

  • Philosophie „Reach new heights"

This means for the Betzinstitute to strive for the best results, be it on an aesthetic level and also for your well-being and new self-confidence. We improve your overall appearance and help you finally achieve the perfect body proportions.
